A Few Favorite Programs

Fast Explorer is a veeery handy program! I absolutely love it! Only a bit over a meg installed and free to boot.

What it does is let you add items to the right click menu (for more about that, see "Context Menus"). This is what the interface looks like. What you see here is a bit smaller than the actual one because I reduced it to save space in this file. The GUI can't be changed in size which is a bit of a pain because you have to keep scrolling to see your entries.

There is no "help" either so it would be a good idea to save the file type and shell information at the site to help you get started.

The only thing that takes a bit of time to understand is that when a particular thing is displayed on the context menu depends upon where you put it in Fast Explorer. For example, if it is associated with a particular file type, clicking on that file type and that file type only will open the menu for that type. For example, I have several associated with MP3s...

The "MP3" on the context menu is associated in Fast Explorer with that file extension and each of the sub-menus in the context menu are sub-entries under "MP3" in Fast Explorer. By the way, the vertical lines that look like bar codes in the screen shot of the Fast Explorer GUI are separators...you can put them wherever you like to help catagorize the context menus.

The context menu sub-menus can have sub-menus too as illustrated in this shot of the context menu associated withwaves.

If you associate the context menu entries with "File Folder" you can get something like this whenever you right click on a folder...
The sub-menus under "Music" are similar to the ones that were in the MP3 menu but there are fewer. That's because some programs will behave differently if started from a folder context menu...like try to open an instance of themselves for each file contained in the folder. You can run out of memory in a BIG hurry! :)

Here's one more screen shot to maybe give you some ideas...

I really like this program...it gives me virtually instant access to those programs I use most frequently. If you keep shortcuts on the desk top, you can clear off a bunch. No need to do Start > Programs and scroll through a long list either. The only thing faster and easier is Hot Key Plus...but that's a different story.
