To me, this is an important step...filling out
the tags as completely and accurately as possible. There are
many excellent tag editors. I happen to like Tag&Rename.
It is also handy for correcting the case in the file names.
Isn't free though. A nice free one is MPTagger.
So what is a tagger, anyway? Or more to the point, what is a
tag? An ID3 tag is a small amount of information about the file
that can be added to the file. They let you include information
such as song name, artist, album, year, track number, genre
and comment.
There are two basic versions of ID3 tags...version 1 and version
2. Version 1 tags are 128 bytes in length and are written to
the end of the file. Fields within them are fixed length. Version
2 tags have a few additional fields and are more flexible. They
can even include images if you wish. However, they are written
to the start of the file which means the entire file has to
be re-written if you add/delete/edit(?) one. You can get more
information about both types of tags here.
My personal preferance is for V1 tags but it doesn't matter
that much. What matters is that you use one or the other (or
both). |
